What happens when Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg make a baby? It gets to be French actress and pop singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. Featured in February's Vogue Most Wanted, Gainsbourg is the inspiration on how to do menswear with a feminine undertone. My friend Lucien pointed out at coffee that models have a similar genetic makeup to hermaphrodites, which intrigues me to no end. I could go on about the dumbness of a culture, the one where certain people want style icons to be not iconic, but instead I will research this matter and write a piece on why we have for thousands of years been fascinated by masculine femininity.

For now we have, thankfully, high fashion and rock'n'roll to save us from ourselves. I'm in love with the bandeau lace bra that we've been seeing since Fall. Nordstrom carries it, and so does Dolce Vita in Ballard. It looks chic under a deep V.

The bottom photo shows Charlotte Gainsbourg in a reflective, more vulnerable pose evoking a higher degree of femininity than in the photo above. God, she's cool. I love a girl who knows her options.
